Born June 4, 1936 near Norman Park, Georgia to the late Emma Jane Phelps and Robert Arthur Hunnicutt, Sr., Jack remained a true son of Colquitt County throughout his life. Jack was passionate about family and business - he was a husband, father, grandfather, banker, neighbor and friend. Jack was a gentleman farmer and a true champion of all agriculture across Southwest Georgia.  Jack completed grammar and middle school at Funston and graduated from Moultrie High School in 1954. He told fond memories of football but rarely mentioned academics as supported by his report cards. He served in the US Army and returned to Moultrie and married Faustine (Tina) Jones of Mystic, GA. Starting out as - the "gopher"- at Moultrie Banking, Jack rose through the ranks from teller to executive of Citizens and Southern Bank(C&S). Jack was from an era of self-educated men with a great determination to succeed. In 1970, Jack was approached by local Moultrie business leaders to form American Banking Company (ABC), becoming its CEO and expanding the bank across South Georgia, Alabama and Florida to what is now known as Ameris Bank throughout the Southeastern United States. Jack was instrumental in developing Ameris to a publicly traded company in 1994. He retired as Chairman of Ameris in 2006. Jack was a devoted community banker and always wanted to help local "folks”.  He served as chairman of the Georgia Bankers Association and participated in local civic organizations as well as several statewide appointed positions. He also served as a director on several regional corporate boards. He was a life member of Funston Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.  Jack was devoted to family - assisting his widowed mother from a young age as well as a lifelong commitment to his brothers and sisters and extended family. He raised and encouraged his children's independence; however, most importantly each grandchild was the "apple of his eye".

Jack is survived by his wife, Tina, son, Greg (Susan), daughter, Angie (Patrick) and son, Plenn (JoBeth); grandchildren Selden, Wythe, Phelps, Wheeler, Kilby, and Thomas; a sister, Jean Gamble, and numerous brother and sister in-laws, nieces, nephews and special friends.

Memorials to charities of your choice or if so desired to Funston Baptist Church, 142 W. Mulberry St. Funston GA. 31753.
