Moultrie, Georgia – Rose Stephens Cochran, of Moultrie, Georgia, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025, at her residence.
At her request, no services will be held.
She was the daughter of the late William Emory Stephens and Bessie Lewis Stephens, of Thomasville, Georgia.
Rose was an exceptionally talented pianist. Beginning in elementary school, she played for school and church assemblies. In district and state music festivals, she received superior ratings and was voted Most Talented of her senior class. At age fourteen, Rose gave her first solo recital and became a church pianist.
During her high school summers at Florida State University, she compiled a fine record. She studied piano under Franciszek Zachara and chorus with Dr. Herman Gunter. Dance band and other related music studies were also included. She performed as piano soloist and choral accompanist in concerts and was Mistress of Ceremonies for banquets. Rose was the first recipient of a special musicianship award for piano. She was awarded bronze, silver and gold medals for citizenship.
In sports she was a winner in mixed doubles badminton and table tennis. As a bowler her photo was used for publicity publications.
Rose served several churches in Thomas and Colquitt counties over a period of about thirty-three years as pianist, music director, organist and music secretary. She organized the first youth choir at Trinity Baptist Church, where she was a member.
In other music activities, Rose taught piano for eighteen years, played for weddings, funerals, art center productions, Junior Woman’s Club annual “Follies”, banquets and private parties. Rose enjoyed private and group travel, fishing, crafts, water aerobics and hosting parties for various groups and staff at the “Y”.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of fifty-two years, William Marvin Cochran; three brothers; five sisters; and two nephews.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Anyone desiring to make a memorial may give to the Music Fund at Trinity Baptist Church, Humane Society of Moultrie and Colquitt County, or to a charity of your choosing.
