Americus, Georgia – Melvin Farrel Sloan, 74, of Americus, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Midway Free Will Baptist Church, with the Reverend Randy Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at Midway Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Cobb Funeral Chapel.
Casketbearers will be Ricky Fender, James “Squeaky” Eason, Chad Gay, Don Jackson, Rocky Hancock and Tony Kick.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Colquitt County Hunting Club.
Born April 30, 1952, in Moultrie, Georgia, he was a son of the late Charles Rufus Sloan and the late Loudella Giles Sloan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Wayne Sloan and Max Sloan; and sister Maxine Coleman and husband, Ronald “Bubba”.
Survivors include his loving wife, Brenda Schofield Sloan; sons, John Shannon Taylor (Hollie) and Paul Schofield (Chandler); daughter, Tara Schofield (Scott Payne); grandchildren, Sloan Taylor, Laural Taylor, Logan Schofield, (Leahonna), Lindsey Wildes (Joel), Samuel Schofield, Nolan Schofield, Charleigh Schofield, Madison Schofield, Connor Schofield, John Roberts Payne and Theron Payne; great-grandchildren, Liam Harris, Lawson Harris, Brantley Schofield, Joshua Schofield, Weston Schofield, Oakley Wildes, Finnlo Wildes and Josephine Wildes; nephews, Shannon Wisham (Sonya) and Jarrod Coleman (Tina); as well as extended family and many dear friends.
He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose greatest joy was found in the simple blessings of life and the people he loved most. He treasured every moment spent with family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished for generations. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and racing, and could often be found relaxing while watching his favorite Western television shows. He was a proud member of the Colquitt County Hunting Club, where he treasured the fellowship, the outdoors, and sharing his passion for hunting with others.
He retired from Expert Modular Consultants as a State Inspector. He will be remembered for his gentle heart, generous spirit, steadfast faith, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy of kindness, integrity, and devotion will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know and love him.
Melvin’s greatest legacy was the love he gave so freely to this family. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to either PruittHealth Hospice or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Cobb Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
