Lawson "Lane" Whitley

May 10, 1941 — June 1, 2021

Lawson Lane Whitley, 80, of Moultrie, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at his home.

Funeral services, with military honors, will be held 11:00 AM Friday, June 4, 2021, at First Baptist Church of Moultrie with the Reverend Wayne Woods and the Reverend Matt Peek officiating.   A private interment will be in Cobb-Suncrest Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Casketbearers will be Stephen Tyus, Danny Horne, Lavon Stripling, Ray Harrell, Harry Thompson, Dr. Clyde Lamon, Dr. Tim Fagan and Jack Morrell.

Born May 10, 1941, in Pelham, Georgia, he was the son of the late Willard Rhett Whitley and Hazel Lane Whitley.  Mr. Whitley was a United States Air Force Vietnam Veteran.  He was a 1959 graduate of Pelham High School and received his B.S. in Business Administration from Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Ga.   Mr. Whitley retired from the State of Georgia as CEO of Georgia Industries for the Blind where he worked for 34 years.   He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Moultrie, where he sat on the front pew for 28 years with his loving wife Debby who is the church organist.   Mr. Whitley loved God, his family and friends and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and Georgia football.  He was a man of his word and when he said something, you could count on it.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Rhett Phillips Whitley; grandchild, Hunter Bill Whitley; brother, Ralph Whitley.

Survivors include his wife, Debra “Debby” Stripling Whitley of Moultrie; children, Richie Sloan of Moultrie, Shae Sloan Suber and husband Michael of Kathleen, Georgia, Lyndsey Whitley Harrell and husband Michael of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Bricelyn Sloan, Chance Suber and wife Miriam, Caelyn Suber, Pate Suber; great-grandchildren, Camila Suber, Amelia Suber; beloved family dog, Briggs Whitley. 

Special thanks to the CRMC Hospice Staff, especially his hospice nurse, Ashley Carter and his devoted personal caregiver Annie Ludden.
