Obituary

Cartersville, Georgia – Lawrence Jackson Hyde, 94, of Cartersville, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born December 15, 1931, in Gainesville, Georgia, he was a son of the late William Dorsey Hyde and the late Annie Odessa Waldrep Hyde.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings who passed in infancy, as well as Charlotte Hyde, Thera Zifle and James Hyde.

Survivors include his wife of almost 65 years, Claire Duggan Hyde; daughter, Diane Hyde Smith; son, Lawrence Jackson Hyde, Jr.; grandsons, William Graham Smith and William Denton Smith; as well as several nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends.

Born in Gainesville, Georgia, he was raised in Walhalla, South Carolina. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, receiving an honorable discharge in 1954. Following service in the military, he graduated from Georgia Southern University. He moved to Moultrie to teach high school English and coach tennis and swimming. While in Moultrie, he met Claire Duggan and they married on March 15, 1961. He later worked for the Centers for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency.

He was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed golf, working in his yard, Clemson football, and loved spending time with his family.

He will be laid to rest at Westview Cemetery in Moultrie, Georgia, and the family will have a memorial service at a later date in Cartersville, Georgia.

The family is requesting no flowers.
