Joy Jones Cone, 92, of Brunswick, passed away peacefully on Feb. 4, 2021, at Hospice of the Golden Isles.
Born on Nov. 4, 1928, in Worth County, Ga., Joy was the daughter of the late Boyd Lane Jones, Sr. and the late Blanche Jenkins Jones. Her family settled in Moultrie, Ga., where she and her six brothers and sisters enjoyed a homelife full of love and laughter, faith, and music. She and her youngest brother and sister were talented vocalists, and the trio performed together on the radio in their youth. Before she married, Joy worked alongside her sisters in their upholstery and drapery shop in Moultrie.
Joy married Edward Remer Cone at her family home in Moultrie on Aug. 29, 1948, and they spent most of their years together in Pavo, Georgia, where they raised four daughters. She was an expert in the kitchen, and her girls reminisced how they could often hear her singing through an open window while she cooked and they played outside. Cherished memories are those of Sunday afternoons when Joy and her extended family would gather in Moultrie at the homeplace to visit and share a meal after church.
She graduated from Moultrie High School and Valdosta State College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in library science. After raising her daughters, she worked as a librarian at Magnolia Chappelle Elementary School in Thomas County. Upon retirement from the school system, she and her husband opened Pavo Nursery where they specialized in red tips and azaleas. She was a skilled gardener and grew the loveliest day lilies and amaryllis in the area, as well as a bounty of grapes, blueberries, pecans and mayhaws, which she often shared with others.
Joy was a member of the Brunswick chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and previously served in the Pavo Civic Club. She was a devoted member of Pavo Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union. Even in her final years, she touched many people with her kind spirit and was well-known for her warm and cheerful smile.
In addition to her parents and five siblings, she was predeceased by her husband Edward Remer Cone; daughters Dianne Cone Jackson, Karen Cone Price, and Elaine Cone Jones; and granddaughter Amanda Elizabeth Price.
She is survived by her daughter Phyllis Cone McNicoll and husband Steve of Brunswick; son-in-law Jim Jackson of Darien; son-in-law Granvil Jones of Pavo; grandchildren Leslie Jackson (Denny McBrayer), Stephanie McNicoll Bialek (David), Jason McNicoll (Rebecca), Christopher Jones, David McNicoll (Chelsey), and Rebecca Jones Sahar (Liron); and great-grandchildren Jack and Sammy McBrayer; Edward, Joseph and Philip Bialek; Emmaline McNicoll; and Jacob and John McNicoll. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Lynn and Barbara Jones of Moultrie, Ga. She will be greatly missed by her extended family of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 8, 2021, at Pavo Baptist Church with burial to follow at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Pavo. In consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the family requires that all in attendance wear face masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines.
