Joe lived a long, full life. He served in the U.S. Army and was assigned to a special unit with Military Intelligence, serving as an illustrator. Upon completing his tour, he attended art school in Orlando, Florida, in preparation for a career in commercial art. He worked as a commercial artist for Radium Studios in Albany, GA and Network Publications, in Lawrenceville, GA.

In his early life as an artist, Joe was an avid painter. Later, he pursued a career in photography and videography. He visited and photographed many of our nation’s national parks, with Yellowstone and the Great Smoky Mountains being two of his favorites.

Joe was an avid hobbyist and was always building things or remodeling areas of his home and workshop. In the past few years, he spent most of his hobby time working with a sawmill at his family farm. He had quite an interest in milling different types of trees and often did custom work for friends and neighbors.

He was an active member of Poplar Arbor Church, often donating his time and labor. He designed and helped build many areas of the church, including building the new steeple and remodeling of the sanctuary in 1985 and overseeing the construction of the fellowship hall in 2005. He also served as church treasurer for several decades.

Joe was a loyal supporter of Heritage Academy, a Christian school which is housed on church property. He and his brother Rufus built a classroom for the school and oversaw the expansion and remodeling of the school buildings in 2016. Joe often spoke in grand terms regarding the potential of this school to reach generations for Christ.

Mr. Lane is survived by his brothers Rufus Lane of Sale City and Cleve Lane and wife Daryl Ann of Mitchell County; numerous other family members and friends.
