Irene Jordan McMurphy

October 15, 1920 — December 8, 2023

Quitman

On December 8, 2023, our dear mother, Irene McMurphy, peacefully passed into the arms of Jesus.  She entered into her everlasting home in heaven.

Funeral services will be held at Moultrie Church of God, 3113 Veterans Parkway, Moultrie, GA on Tuesday December 12, 2023, at 3:00 PM with Reverend Ricky McLaughlin and Reverend Daryl Pate officiating.  Interment will follow in Cobb Suncrest Memorial Gardens.

The family will greet friends from 2:00-2:45 PM at Moultrie Church of God.

She was blessed to live 103 years on this earth where she enjoyed all of God’s creations.  She especially loved her flowers, and she enjoyed canning, sewing, and crocheting.  She was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her.  She was well loved in her church, the Moultrie Church of God. She enjoyed serving God in her role as a greeter on the welcome committee at Moultrie Church of God as well as singing and visiting the nursing homes. She had a heart of gold and a beautiful humble spirit.  However, she maintained a strict disciplinary philosophy when it came to her children and grandchildren.  Her outgoing personality showed unconditional Christian love.  One of her proudest achievements was her role as a mother to seven fortunate and grateful children.  She was a grandmother to 22 grandchildren and great-grandmother to 32 great-grandchildren, great-great grandmother to 36 and a great-great-great-grandmother to one.  Irene cherished her many offspring blessings.

What did she teach us? She taught us how to be successful by first being an example herself.  This included everyday challenges as well as serving and loving God with all her heart.

Irene was born in 1920 in Moultrie, Georgia to Percy and Louvenia Jordan.  She married the love of her life, Dewitt Talmadge McMurphy, and together they established their home until his death.

Survivors include Gene (Kaye) McMurphy, Opal (Billy) Williams, Mary Lou (Devane) Ritter, Willine (Henry) Busbin, Betty (Danny) Vickers, Mike Frailey (son-in-law) and Barbara Jordan (sister-in-law).

Irene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dewitt Talmadge McMurphy, Bonnie Frailey (daughter), George (son) and Barbara (daughter-in-law) McMurphy, William Matthews, Sr (son-in-law) and granddaughter, Katrina Anne Hart.

Irene will be remembered by her children as a sparkling light who inspired and guided her family.  Her infectious energy, curiosity, enthusiasm, and love nourished and guided us all.  She showed us what we could be, how we could give, and what a well-lived life was like.  We know you are enjoying your new body on the streets of gold; but here on this earth, no one will ever be able to fill your shoes.

A special thank you to the caring staff of Presbyterian Home and Retirement Community, and Bethany Hospice of Thomasville for their loving and dedicated care.

Cobb Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
