Born March 29, 1942, in Tifton, Georgia, he was the son of the late Robert Earl Willett and Lucille Usry Willett.  Mr. Darrell was known affectionately by all as “Coach”.  He played football for the Tifton Blue Devils until 1960 and continued to play football as an offensive tackle at Florida State University from 1961-1964.  Coach Willett graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in education and later completed a master’s degree at Valdosta State University.  He spent the next 35 years teaching and coaching in various communities in Southwest Georgia, spending most of his time in Colquitt County, from where he retired in 2007.   You may also recognize him from the community as a local Driver’s Education teacher.  In 1977, Coach Willett married the love of his life, Eleanor Ann Arwood.  Eleanor also retired in 2009 as a teacher from Stringfellow Elementary School.  Darrell and Eleanor Ann were happily married for 40 years up until her passing in 2017.  They spent most of their summers traveling all over the world.  Germany was one of their favorite places to travel.  In the fall, they followed the Seminoles as die-hard fans! (Paragraph was shared from Legacy Village of Park Regency Newsletter.)

Survivors include his daughter, Amy Willett Trussell and husband Steven Trussell of Boca Raton, FL; grandchildren, Tyler K. Trussell and Lillian Ann Trussell.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Moultrie/Colquitt County Humane Society, PO Box 2915, Moultrie, GA 31768.
