Born December 4, 1936, in San Salvador, El Salvador, he was the son of the late Jose Sandoval and Lucia Calvo Sandoval. Mr. Sandy retired from the National Institute of Health as a chemist. Even though he was born abroad, he gained his citizenship in the United States. For much of his career he worked for the National Institutes of Health in the Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Working for the nation’s leading grantor for medical research, he helped fund research for many of the medications now used to control hypertension and cholesterol. Mr. Sandy worked hard to finish his degree and worked for a private chemistry lab after graduating until he joined the federal government, first at the FDA and later at NIH where he worked on a Nobel Prize winning research in the 1970’s. Early in his career he left laboratory work and worked managing grants. He traveled to many exotic places for his work. His talent for reading grant proposals in the field of cardiac diseases and hypertension put him in a group of people with advanced degrees. Mr. Sandy was a devoted, compassionate son, husband, father and grandfather, who loved his family dearly. He was a good son, even taking care of his mama for 4 years when she needed help. Mr. Sandy truly loved his wife, Mrs. Betty, they were soulmates for 25 years, married for 18 years and renewed their vows after 10 years of marriage. He was a happy man who would even laugh at his own jokes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dora Cuellar.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Betty Ann Williams Sandoval of Moultrie; children, Joseph Sandoval and wife Nancy of North Carolina, Richard Sandoval and wife Diana of Ohio, Stephen Sandoval of Virginia, Jack Adams and wife Leslee of Moultrie; grandchildren, Tyler Sandoval and wife Carrie, Lian Sandoval, Madison Adams; great-grandchild, Rosemary Sandoval; several extended family members and friends.
